Teaching Staff:

The Language Center has on average ten teachers available. Teachers must
have at least a BA, preferably in Chinese, along with some teaching experience.
The Language Center recruits through public advertisements.
Candidates are given written and oral tests. The student/teacher ratio is 5:1.

Facilities:

The Language Center has 12 classrooms, student lounge, and one library
with ten recording carrels. Auditing of Chengchi University classes is
permitted, as is use of the main library. Language labs are available when
necessary.

Students:

Students come from Belgium, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia,
Japan, Korea, the Philippines, South Africa, and the United States. There is
an even female/male ratio.

Admissions:

Admission requirements: Students must be 18 years of age or older and
graduated from high school or equivalent with grades of at least "B."
Application requirements/procedures: Students must submit a completed
application form, photocopy of diploma, transcript (in English), letters of
recommendation, health certification with results of HIV test, and guarantee
that the student has at least US$2,000.

Calendar:

The academic year is divided into four terms. The dates of each term (for
1993-94) with application deadlines are as follows:

Tuition:

Fees are calculated according to hours of instruction. Students may
register for individual classes or classes with five to seven students.

Curriculum and Instruction:

Courses are divided into beginning, elementary, intermediate, and advanced
levels. At the beginning and elementary levels, more emphasis is placed on
oral/aural skills. At the intermediate and advanced levels, additional focus
is placed on reading/writing skills. In order for a student to be considered
full-time, he or she must register for at least ten hours of classes per week.

Extracurricular Activities:

The Language Center sponsors various cultural activities, depending on
what preferences the students express through questionnaires. Until now,
cultural activities have included: The Beauty of Stone Engraving, How to Make
a Chinese Lantern, Fragrant Tea Excursion, Dumpling Party, Chinese Knot-tying,
Tour of the National Palace Museum, and speech contests.

Scholarships:

The Center offers no scholarships or financial aid to its students.
However, after successfully completing three months of full time study,
students are eligible to apply for scholarships offered by the ROC Ministry of
Education. Please see Appendix II for further information.

Housing:

None available, although the Center is willing to provide students with
information regarding rooms and apartments for rent.

Transcripts of Certificates Awarded:

Students will be issued a "record of study" upon completion of their
course work. However, this will only be issued to full time students.

Transfer Credit:

Students must make their own arrangements with their home institutions.

Exchange Agreements with Foreign Institutions:

The Language Center welcomes arrangements for groups sponsored by
colleges, universities, and business organizations. Arrangements should be
made directly between the group's sponsoring agent and the Language Center.
Group members will still be required to complete individual application forms
and submit health certificates with results of an HIV test.
