Teaching Staff:
Seven full and part-time instructors. Most instructors are university
graduates with liberal arts majors and have training in language instruction
and educational psychology. The student/teacher ratio is 13:1.
Facilities:
Five general classrooms, one reading room, one language lab and
audiovisual room equipped with television, VCR, and tape recorders. Students
are issued a student ID card that gives them full rights and privileges to use
all school facilities. They may join in activities and entertainment taking
place in the University's Recreation Hall, as well as participate in student
clubs and organizations. Moreover, they are welcome to use all sports
facilities, such as the tennis courts and basketball courts, football field and
jogging track, and the olympic-sized swimming pool.
Students:
Roughly even male/female ratio. Distribution by national origin: Britain,
USA, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa,
Australia, Canada, Holland, Panama, Peru, and others.
Admissions:
Application is open to all persons who are 18 years of age or older,
possess at least a senior high school diploma (or equivalent), have a grade
average of at least "B" (or equivalent), and exhibit a sincere interest in
learning Chinese. Application requirements/procedures: Applicants must submit
a completed application form, study plan (stating general study goals, Chinese
language ability, and reasons for wishing to study Chinese), photocopy of
highest academic diploma, transcript (in English) of highest academic record,
at least one letter of recommendation by present or former Chinese teacher (if
the applicant has not studied Chinese before, he or she should submit an
English letter of recommendation by a present teacher), health certification
(including results of HIV and venereal tests) signed by a certified doctor, and
one letter of guarantee from and ROC citizen (if the applicant does not have a
guarantor in Taiwan, time will be given to find one after arrival). Upon
acceptance, the student will be told when to report for registration.
Other admissions information: There is no extra registration fee.
Registration procedures include tuition payment, orientation for new students
(attendance is required), placement tests, and class selection.
Calendar:
The academic year is divided into four terms, Spring, Summer, Fall,
Winter. Each term is three months long. Registration may be for no less than
one term. At time of registration, students may register for two consecutive
terms. Students may not register for a term already in progress, except under
special circumstances.

Tuition:
Tuition is payable at time of registration. Fees are calculated by terms.
The fee for one term is NT$19,100; for two terms, (for students registering at
one time for two consecutive terms) NT$32,700. This includes tuition for up to
twenty hours of class per week, miscellaneous fees, dormitory, and student
health insurance (this applies to those registering for no less than two terms,
or six months). If dormitory space is not available, tuition will be reduced
by NT$ 2300 (for one term), or NT$4500 (for two terms). Note that students
registering for only one term (three months) are not eligible for student
health insurance, and should instead carry international health insurance.
Living Expenses:
Students should prepare NT$6-8,000 per month.
Curriculum and Instruction:
The curriculum includes elementary, intermediate, and advanced Chinese,
writing, reading, and conversation courses, as well as courses in literature,
history, economics, Chinese culture, newspaper reading, TV news, and
callingraphy. The ROC Ministry of Education requires foreign students to take
a minimum of ten hours per week of classes. However, students may take up to
twenty hours of classes per week without extra tuition charge.
After being assigned to courses by an initial placement test, students may
enter and leave courses according to their individual progress and special
interests. Students may thus devise their own special study programs.
The school considers its principal purpose to be to provide Chinese
language instruction for the children of Overseas Chinese.
Extracurricular Activities:
The Center's teachers give assistance in planning sight-seeing trips
around Taiwan.
Scholarships:
The Center offers no scholarships or financial aid to its students.
However, after successfully completing three months of full time study,
students are eligible to apply for scholarships offered by the ROC Ministry of
Education. Please see Appendix II for further information.
Housing:
The school provides dormitory housing for Overseas Chinese students.
Foreign students may also apply for dormitory housing, but priority is given to
Overseas Chinese.
Transcripts or Certificates Awarded:
Upon completion of the student's studies, a certificate will be issued
indicating the length of time the student was enrolled, the completed hours of
instruction, and study materials used.
Transfer Credit:
Students must make their own arrangements for credit unless they
participate in an exchange program.
Exchange Agreements with Foreign Institutions:
Fengchia's Chinese language center admits exchange students from sister
institutions, summer term students from sister institutions, students
introduced to the school individually by friends or classmates, and students
recommended by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Council.
